Edina fourth-graders learn about safety through fun
Edina, Minn., July 30, 2009 – Over 100 Edina fourth-graders got the
opportunity to see the Jaws of Life in action, shake paws with a canine cop and
take part in a variety of interactive activities focused on safety. On Tuesday,
July 28, the Edina Police, Fire and Park & Recreation departments held their
annual interactive Safety Camp at the South Metro Public Safety Training
Facility, and were met with a large crowd of excited campers.
“We were very excited that the program registration filled up two months before
the date of camp,” said Edina Recreation Supervisor Donna Tilsner, who helped
plan the event. “The campers learned so much about so many aspects of safety.”
Campers were divided into five groups, each with Edina firefighters and police
officers serving as team leaders. The day-long event kicked off with a visit
from the Minnesota State Patrol helicopter, which swooped in to give campers the
opportunity to get an up-close look at the machine and ask questions of the
pilot. From there, campers broke out into morning sessions where they learned
about helmet and bicycle safety, stranger danger, how to stay safe around water
and in boats, power line safety from Xcel Energy and snow plow safety from Edina
Public Works.
“All the sessions were relevant to the things these kids encounter on a daily
basis,” said Edina Police Administrative Assistant Aimee Canepa, who was taking
part in her first Safety Camp. “I was impressed at how well the kids listened
and provided feedback to the speakers, which I think attests to the quality of
the presenters and their presentations.”
After a vehicle extrication demonstration and a visit from K9 Officer Diesel,
campers were treated to a pizza lunch from Davanni’s Pizza & Hot Hoagies. The
afternoon sessions began with a visit from KARE 11 meteorologist Kristin Clark,
who spoke about what do to in cases of severe weather and a visit from the
Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, who spoke on internet safety. From there,
campers broke out into sessions on fire and gun safety, a presentation by John
Carlson from Dakota Wild Animals and an inspirational speech by quadriplegic
artist Don Bania. The camp concluded with a closing ceremony.
“We have been doing Safety Camp for years, and I am always ecstatic about the
enthusiasm and response we get from the kids and parents,” said Edina Fire
Marshal Tom Jenson. “By providing such a variety of safety information in a fun
and interactive way, we are hoping that the messages will stick with these kids
and they will be better equipped to stay safe.”
