Spring burning restrictions in effect in Edina until further notice
Edina, Minn., April 9, 2009 – Warming temperatures, dry vegetation and strong
winds during the spring months present a dangerous fire risk. As a result,
annual spring open burning restrictions are in effect in Edina as of 8 a.m.
April 9.
“To control the possibilities of dangerous outdoor fires springing up around the
City, we strictly enforce spring burning restrictions,” said Fire Chief Marty
Scheerer. “The purpose of the restrictions is to reduce personal property damage
resulting from wildfires caused by burning debris.”
Historically, 80 percent of all wildfires in Minnesota occur during April and
May. Since the inception of annual restrictions, the number of spring wildland
fires has been reduced.
Burning restrictions will remain in effect until vegetation greens up enough to
significantly lower the fire danger. Residents will still be able to obtain a
recreational fire permit through the use of the City of Edina website, but will
not be allowed to have a recreational fire until the ban is lifted. Once lifted,
residents will be required to call the recreation fires hotline at 952-826-0398
before burning to ensure it is allowed.
