Residential Security
The first step in preventing home burglaries is to lock all doors and
windows. Residents should also consider the following options to increase the
security of your home:
House Numbers
- House numbers should be at least 6 inches tall in a contrasting color
and well lighted at night.
Exterior Lighting
- Leave on exterior lights at night and install motion lights in all
vulnerable areas.
Doors/Locks/Strike Plates
- Exterior doors should be made of a solid wood or steel.
- Install deadbolt locks on all doors. Deadbolt locks should be of good
quality and have a one-inch throw.
- Add security strike plates on all door frames – heavy duty plates
approximately 6 inches long that use four to six three-inch screws.
Windows
- Install pins in double hung windows.
- Remove the cranks on casement windows.
Lights and Noise
- When you leave your home, put a lamp and radio on a timer.
Call 9-1-1 if you see or hear anything suspicious.
