Advisory Boards  & Commissions

Rule

Although members of the Edina City Council are elected, many volunteers serve on various commissions that make recommendations to the Council.

The meetings of these advisory boards and commissions are open to the public. The present boards, commissions and committees and their regular meeting times are:

Community Health Committee, 6:30 p.m. Meets four times per year. Each of the seven members serves a three-year term.

Construction Board of Appeals, on call. The Board considers appeals of decisions made by the Chief Building Official, Public Health Sanitarian or the Fire Prevention Bureau in the application of City ordinances regulating building construction. The Board is made up of five members and the Chief Building Official, plus an alternate. Each volunteer serves a three-year term.

Edina Art Center Board, 4:30 p.m., fourth Thursday of the month. The Board develops and reviews plans for the development of the Edina Art Center and makes recommendations to the City Council concerning art activities and programs.

Energy & Environment Commission, 7 p.m., second Thursday of the month. The nine-member Commission helps the City stay on the forefront of issues of sustainability.

Heritage Preservation Board, 7 p.m., second Tuesday of the month. The nine-member Board advises the Council on matters concerning identification and preservation of buildings, land or areas of particular historical, architectural, cultural or educational significance. Seven Board members are appointed to serve a three-year term. One Board member representing the Edina Planning Commission and one student member serve one-year terms.

Human Rights and Relations Commission, 7 p.m., fourth Tuesday of the month. Made up of nine appointees, including a student member, the Commission seeks to secure for all residents freedom from discrimination and addresses issues relating to a variety of human needs, rights and services. Each Commission member serves a three-year term. The student member serves one year.

Park Board, 7 p.m., second Tuesday of the month. The 11-member Board develops and reviews plans for the acquisition and development of parks and recreational facilities, develops recreation programs, reviews parkland dedications for new subdivisions and makes recommendations to the Council. Each member of the Board, which includes a member of the Board of Education, serves a three-year term.

Planning Commission, 7 p.m., Wednesday prior to the first Council meeting of the month. The nine-member Commission reviews development plans and advises the Council on all development, including amendments to the comprehensive plan, zoning, platting, changes in streets and other matters of a general planning nature. Each Commission member serves a three-year term.

Transportation Commission, 6 p.m., third Thursday of the month. The nine-member Commission advises the Council on matters relating to the operation of the local street system with respect to traffic volumes, congestion, and functional classification, but not maintenance activities, of the City. The Commission reviews and comments on plans to enhance mass transit opportunities in the City and reviews the findings of the Local Traffic Task Force and offers recommendations for implementation. In addition, the Commission evaluates methods for traffic calming and other speed and volume mitigation measures and recommend their implementation where appropriate.

Zoning Board of Appeals, 5:30 p.m., first and third Thursdays of the month. The six-member Board hears and acts upon requests for variances to zoning regulations. Member terms last three years.
